Ivory Coast have officially become the eighth African nation in football history to reach the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup, achieving the feat for the first time in their fourth appearance at the tournament.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions beat Curacao 2-0 to finish second in Group E with six points.

The Elephants had previously failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2006, 2010, and 2014, but their success at the 2026 World Cup marks a significant milestone for Ivorian football.

Ivory Coast join an elite list of African nations that have reached the knockout stages:

Nigeria and Morocco lead the way with three knockout appearances each, while Senegal and Ghana have both advanced twice. Cameroon, Algeria, South Africa, and now Ivory Coast have each reached the knockout stage.

The achievement comes as part of a record-breaking tournament for African football, with 10 nations qualifying for the expanded 48-team World Cup and several advancing to the knockout rounds.

Ivory Coast's success adds to the growing legacy of African football on the world stage. The Elephants have long been considered one of the continent's strongest sides, with a golden generation featuring Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, and Kolo Touré coming close to reaching the knockout stages in previous tournaments but ultimately falling short.

This time, however, Ivory Coast have delivered on their potential, securing their place in the Round of 32 and setting up a clash with Denmark on Saturday, June 27.

The achievement is a testament to the growing strength and depth of African football. With nations like Morocco, South Africa, and Ghana also making deep runs, the continent is proving that it can compete with the traditional powers of world football.

For Ivory Coast, reaching the knockout stages is a historic moment that will inspire a new generation of players and fans. The Elephants will now be looking to make an even deeper run and continue their remarkable journey at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.

The forward kept his composure and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner to give Ivory Coast a 1-0 lead.

Curacao responded with moments of threat as Leandro Bacuna almost levelled the match just before halftime, breaking through the defence but sending his close-range effort narrowly wide. Sherel Floranus also came close in the second half, firing an effort just over the crossbar after a rebound fell to him outside the box.

Ivory Coast, however, remained in control and doubled their advantage in the 64th minute. Ibrahim Sangare delivered a precise pass into the box, where Pepe found himself unmarked and finished clinically. This time around, he curled his effort into the top left corner to make it 2-0.

That second goal effectively sealed the contest and ensured Ivory Coast saw out the remainder of the match comfortably.

The victory secured second place in Group E with six points and confirmed Ivory Coast’s qualification to the knockout stage of the World Cup for the first time in the tournament's history.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.

His defensive awareness, ball recovery, and leadership helped shield the backline and maintain Ghana's compact shape throughout the contest.

The former Arsenal man's outing was convincing enough to earn him the JAC Motors MVP award. He received a plaque and an amount of $2000 for being named the MVP by the GFA committee.

JAC Motors will also reward the chosen best player from the game between Ghana and Croatia on Sunday, June 27, as well as subsequent games at the World Cup involving the Black Stars.

For Partey, the recognition is a testament to his importance to the Black Stars and his ability to deliver on the biggest stage.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.

The 2003-born forward is regarded as a promising young player with pace, stamina and a strong work rate, qualities that should help him settle quickly in his new environment.

Kisseih arrives after a solid spell in Serie D with Ferrandina, where he made his first real impact in the division. In 29 appearances, he scored six goals and provided two assists, showing signs of steady growth and useful attacking instinct. For Fidelis Andria, that profile fits a team looking to add energy, depth and more movement in the final third.

The club, which competes in Serie D and plays at the Stadio Degli Ulivi, sees the signing as part of its build-up to the new season. It's a fantastic experience. It was so tough today, but we played a very good game; we had chances, and technically, I think we played very good," Broos said.

He praised his team's defensive discipline and transition play, which frustrated South Korea throughout the contest. "It was very difficult for South Korea to find the spaces, we defend good and in transition, we were dangerous, and that's what we wanted to do."

Broos, who has overseen South Africa's rebuilding process, dedicated the historic achievement to his players.

"We are in the second round, this is historical…I'm very happy for the guys – players," he added.

The result marks a significant milestone for South African football, with the team having failed to progress beyond the group stage in their three previous World Cup appearances in 1998, 2002, and 2010.

Bafana Bafana will now prepare for their Round of 32 clash against Canada, with the opportunity to extend their historic run even further.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.
