Over four days, German Ambassador to Ghana, Frederik Landshoeft travelled across the North, from Tamale to Bolgatanga and Paga, through Gwollu, Zini, Lambussie and Lawra districts in Upper West, and into the Savannah Region.

He visited border posts, military workshops, farming communities, health facilities, and conflict-affected villages. He came, in his own words, “to listen, to see and to learn.”

What he found was a region under pressure. Terrorist spillover from the Sahel, organised crime, the climate crisis, and limited opportunities for young people are reshaping life along Ghana’s northern frontier.

But he also found determination, communities planning for a better future, and security forces working hard to hold the line.

“The North of Ghana is vulnerable. But it is moving forward. And Germany stands firmly at Ghana’s side, because this matters, for Ghana, for the region and most importantly, for the people of the North,” Ambassador Landshoeft said.

The visit was not ceremonial. It was a deliberate effort to ground Germany’s partnership with Ghana in the realities on the ground, assess what is working and reaffirm commitment where it is needed most.

Border and Defense Cooperation

Germany has been a long-standing partner of Ghana’s security agencies in the North. The Ambassador inspected the Ghana Immigration Service vehicle workshop in Tamale and the Paga border post, where Germany has equipped officers with protective gear and a furnished armed camp.

Through the German Armed Forces Technical Advisory Group (GAFTAG), a vehicle maintenance workshop is under construction in Tamale, due for completion in 2026, serving
as the headquarters maintenance hub for the Northern Command, with additional facilities planned for Bolgatanga and Wa.

In Wa, he visited the GAFTAG-commissioned Dog Kennel Facility, with three additional facilities underway in Ho, Takoradi, and Bui.

“A secure nation is never the result of chance. Germany and Ghana have built this through years of sustained commitment, consistent effort and shared values,” the Ambassador said.

Community Stabilisation and Development Cooperation

In Lambussie-Karni and Sawla-Tuna-Kalba Districts of the Upper West Region, the Ambassador presided over handover ceremonies under the Coastal State Stability Mechanism (CSSM), supported by Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Handovers included 2 police vehicles, 10 motorbikes, medical equipment and 680 dual desks for schools in each district.

Germany and Ghana are long-standing partners in the field of technical and financial cooperation. Since 1957, Germany, co-financed by the EU, has financed hundreds of projects all over Ghana in various sectors.

They are implemented by GIZ, KfW, and various NGOs. In the North, the cooperation
focuses on:

• Improving a more citizen-centred development planning process, introducing participatory Community Action Plans and working with districts planning divisions.

• Improving livelihoods, especially through support of farmers on climate adaptation and production efficiency.

• Investing in social infrastructure, such as schools, health facilities or warehouses, through the District Assembly’s Common Fund (DACF).

• Strengthening community-based peace building and early warning.

Ambassador Frederik Landshoeft visited some of the supported communities: In Gbiniyiri, he witnessed a conflict-affected community choosing peace through a participatory Community Action Plan. In Zini, host communities and refugees are building a shared vision of coexistence.

In Oribili, the Ambassador met farmers navigating climate stress and limited economic opportunities. In Kulmasa, he visited the Holy Mother polyclinic serving women and children in one of the Savannah Region’s most underserved areas.

“Investing in people is just as important as investing in borders. Strong borders, resilient communities, and inclusive development are deeply connected. That is the foundation of Germany’s partnership with Ghana,” he said.

Looking ahead

Germany’s partnership with Ghana is long-standing, holistic and built on trust and shared values. Germany will continue to stand firmly by Ghana’s side, investing in security and sustainable development for the people of Ghana, the region and the future.

At the signing ceremony, Chairman He Liu who led the Hunan delegation expressed Hunan Group commitment to Ghana’s development and said the two parties are already connected through shared networks and mutual trust.

“We are ready to partner for the development of Ghana. Seeing the vision reflected here gives us confidence that this collaboration is built on a strong and practical foundation.” – Chairman He Liu, Hunan Architectural Design Institute Group

Presidential Adviser Mr. Goosie Tanoh recalled discussions that laid the groundwork for the MOU signing in January 2026 during a visit to Changsha, China.

“When we sat together in Changsha, we agreed that this relationship must be practical. Three months later, here we are,” he said.

Mr. Tanoh drew parallels between Hunan’s historic transformation from an agrarian heartland to a global hub for engineering and construction, and Ghana’s current development trajectory, emphasising that “the planning came first” as the cornerstone of Hunan’s success and an approach Ghana is deliberately adopting.

“The institution helped plan the infrastructure that built modern Hunan. We are asking them to bring that same capability to Ghana. The work starts now,” Mr. Augustus Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Adviser, 24-Hour Economy & Accelerated Export Development, said.

About the Volta Economic Corridor

The Volta Economic Corridor is the centrepiece of Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Programme. The national agenda for restructuring how the country produces, processes, and trades. Stretching from the port of Tema through Akosombo, across the Afram Plains, through Yeji, Buipe, and Yapei, and into Tamale, the corridor is designed to be Ghana’s first net-zero green economic corridor.

It will integrate over two million hectares of arable land converted into agroecological parks, connect them to industrial parks, and link both to multimodal transport infrastructure, all financed through structured private investment.

Renewable energy installations along the corridor are targeted to bring power costs below seven cents per kilowatt hour, making manufacturing genuinely competitive. The African Development Bank has committed funding for feasibility studies on the multimodal transport component. The corridor is projected to create over 500,000 direct jobs.

Scope of the MOU

Under the MOU, HADI Group will work with the 24H Economy Secretariat on master planning and spatial layout for the corridor’s key development zones. Specific areas of collaboration include park layout and infrastructure network design for agroecological and industrial parks covering roads, water supply, pipe networks, and sewage treatment systems.

As well as structuring projects under EPC F and EPC I financing models to attract private capital. The agreement also covers technical training and knowledge exchange between Ghanaian planning teams and HADI Group engineers.

Both parties have agreed to commence with pilot projects: two industrial parks and three agroecological parks along the corridor where conceptual design work will begin immediately, allowing both sides to refine the approach before scaling across the full corridor.

In an effort to break long-standing taboos surrounding men’s sexual health, global healthcare company Viatris has taken its EmpowerED for Life campaign to the streets of Accra – encouraging open, stigma-free conversations about Erectile Dysfunction (ED), a subject often avoided in public discourse.

Led by pharmacist and well-known health advocate Dr. George Anagli, the activity aimed to engage everyday Ghanaians in candid discussions about a condition that many view as highly private.

From the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to the Circle Overpass, the team conducted interviews with 27 men and women across various age groups, inviting them to share their thoughts and experiences related to erectile dysfunction.

The responses – authentic, diverse, and sometimes deeply personal – highlighted a rising awareness among the public and underscored the need for greater education and support. While several participants recognised ED as a common and treatable medical condition, others spoke about the lingering stigma that makes it difficult for men to seek help or talk openly

“We wanted to shift this conversation from the confines of clinics into everyday spaces, because awareness truly begins here,” said Arvind Kanda, Head of India & Access Markets (ARVs, India, South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa), Viatris.

“Many men are silently struggling with a condition that affects not only their physical health but also their confidence, relationships, and emotional well-being. Encouraging open dialogue is essential, and initiatives like this help create a safe space for education and understanding,” he added.

Global projections suggest that more than 320 million men worldwide are affected by Erectile Dysfunction, with developing regions projected to see the most significant increases.i Yet despite its prevalence and impact on quality of life, ED remains widely underreported.

Research also indicates that ED can serve as an early indicator of cardiovascular disease, often appearing before more serious heart complications. However, conversations around men’s health, particularly topics considered sensitive, remain limited in many communities, especially where cultural norms discourage open discussion.

“ED is a health condition that deserves genuine attention – not judgment,” said Dr George Anagli, who led the activity in Ghana. “As a pharmacist and advocate, I have witnessed how silence and misinformation delay treatment and contribute to emotional distress. Our goal is to spark conversation, share accurate information, and remind men that they are not alone.”

Among the voices featured in the street interviews was a 32-year-old businessman who emphasised the need for openness: “I’ve realised that ED is far more common than many people think. During my hospital visits, I’ve noticed that doctors are actively encouraging men to speak about it without fear or embarrassment. Hearing this – and seeing more awareness being raised – made me understand the importance of speaking up and seeking help instead of suffering quietly.”

Through this grass-roots activity, Viatris aims to normalise conversations, promote expert guidance, and inspire meaningful action.

The EmpowerED for Life initiative operates across six African countries – Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, and South Africa. The program combines community outreach, digital storytelling, and public education to demystify Erectile Dysfunction and empower men to seek care confidently and without shame, fostering awareness, vulnerability, and action one conversation at a time.

Men experiencing symptoms are encouraged to avoid shame and misinformation, and to speak to a qualified healthcare professional for accurate guidance and appropriate care

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed this, on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF/ World Bank Group Spring Meetings, after an engagement with JICA Senior Vice President Ando Naoki, where discussions focused on Ghana’s economic progress and ongoing infrastructure priorities.

Dr. Forson reaffirmed that Ghana has moved beyond the economic crisis of 2022, noting that the country’s debt is now on a sustainable path and that it is on course to return to a moderate risk of debt distress.

On the Volivo Bridge project, Mr. Naoki indicated that, based on Ghana’s improved macroeconomic outlook, JICA is confident of securing additional funding to support its execution.

He expressed optimism that the contractor will mobilise by the end of the year to commence construction of the bridge.

He also provided an update on the Kumasi Inner Ring Road, confirming that the tender process is currently ongoing, positioning the project for take-off once procurement is finalised.

The Inner Ring Road project is expected to enhance urban mobility in Kumasi through the widening of a 3.2-kilometre stretch between the Santasi and Ahodwo roundabouts.

It will also include the installation of modern traffic signals at key intersections, improvements to pedestrian infrastructure and drainage systems, and enhanced connectivity between the Santasi Roundabout and the N8 corridor.

The United Kingdom has congratulated the Government of Ghana on the launch of the Free Primary Health Care Policy, describing it as a bold step towards Universal Health Coverage and stronger preventive care for all Ghanaians.

The congratulatory message, issued by the UK High Commission in Ghana through its official X handle, also reaffirmed London’s long-standing role in supporting Ghana’s primary health care journey.

A Partnership Rooted in History

The UK High Commission noted that primary health care is the most cost-effective and equitable pathway to Universal Health Coverage — and that the United Kingdom has been proud to support Ghana’s PHC journey over the years.

That support, the statement made clear, has spanned key pillars of Ghana’s health system, including the Community Health and Planning Services (CHPS) and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Significantly, the UK also worked in partnership with Ghana on the development of the Free Primary Health Care Policy itself.
Accra Reset in Practical Reality
The High Commission framed the launch in broader terms, stating that with Free Primary Health Care, Ghana is bringing the Accra Reset and health sovereignty into practical reality — through nationally led and sustainably financed health systems.

The statement positions the policy not merely as a health intervention, but as a concrete expression of Ghana’s commitment to owning and financing its development agenda on its own terms.

The Government has released first quarter funds to the Ghana Scholarships Authority to begin settling outstanding arrears owed to Ghanaian students studying abroad, particularly in the United Kingdom and other countries.

In a statement issued by the Authority, it confirmed that the disbursement is aimed at addressing long-standing delays in the payment of stipends and tuition fees, which have in recent months triggered anxiety among beneficiaries.

The Authority acknowledged the challenges faced by students due to the delays and expressed regret over the inconvenience caused, assuring that the intervention marks the beginning of a broader effort to clear all outstanding obligations.

“This intervention forms part of ongoing efforts by Government to progressively address delays in the payment of stipends and tuition fees,” the statement said, underscoring government’s commitment to the welfare of Ghanaian students abroad.

According to the Authority, it is currently working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the newly released funds are processed promptly, with the expectation that beneficiaries will begin receiving payments in due course.

While no specific timelines were provided, the Authority sought to calm rising concerns among students, many of whom have reportedly struggled to meet living expenses and academic obligations due to the arrears.

Beneficiaries have been urged to remain calm and continue with their studies as efforts are intensified to resolve the situation.

The statement further expressed appreciation to affected students for their patience and cooperation, assuring them of the Authority’s continued support as it works to prevent future delays.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny over the management of scholarship funds and the financial pressures facing Ghanaian students abroad, raising broader questions about sustainability and efficiency in the country’s scholarship administration system.

I’m playing for the people of Ghana, not for an individual person,” Paintsil said. “I’m doing it for Ghanaians to know my worth and that I can deliver whenever I get the chance.”

The 26-year-old also voiced optimism that Queiroz — who previously managed Colombia, Iran, and Egypt — will make fair and merit-based selections for the tournament.

“We are just hoping and praying that the new coach will do the needful — to take the best players to the World Cup, to perform, and to make Ghanaians proud,” he added.

Queiroz took over the Black Stars earlier this week following the dismissal of Otto Addo after a run of poor results.

Paintsil had previously criticised Addo for leaving him out of Ghana’s 2022 World Cup squad, but his recent comments suggest a renewed sense of optimism under the new technical leadership.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.

They just successfully hosted the African Games [AFCON],” Ablakwa said.

He continued, “They have invested tremendously in sporting infrastructure, and we are working with them to also improve our facilities and nurture our young talents. Our cooperation with Morocco is becoming very broad, very deep, and very wide.”

The 2025 AFCON concluded with Senegal defeating hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. The impressive organisation and modern facilities drew global attention to Morocco’s capabilities as a top sporting destination.

Ghana, meanwhile, looks to leverage this partnership to upgrade its own stadiums and training facilities, aiming to develop a stronger ecosystem for both men’s and women’s football — including the Black Queens, who clinched bronze at the 2024 Women’s AFCON.

Send your news stories to [email protected] and via WhatsApp on +233 546310076.
